I have been wanting to write this for a long while so here we go.
The perception of Tia is that we have lots of staff and lots of money. We have neither.
The reality is that we are hanging on by a thread. We have two members of staff on the yard, it was a very welcome surprise when Joshua who worked for us in Doncaster moved up, the lovely Kaela who frankly should be a super model not shoveling horse poo. Shannon and Ria in the kennels who have been here almost from the beginning who adore the dogs. Karen and our fabulous Emma at Pickering, Emma goes above and beyond running the online shop and Ebay in her own time as well as helping Jess out with the stalls. Josh in Doncaster who runs the office, sponsor scheme, website, web shop and everything else…he is brilliant.
And of course Bob.
Over the past year Bob has had only 4 days off. I don’t mean 37.5 hours a week with days off and holidays, i mean 4 days off.
He has worked 362 last year putting in at least 11 hours every day. He does however only get paid for 37.5 hours a week.
We are dead on our feet and we need help. We can’t afford to pay anymore staff, and with everything set to rise again i honestly don’t know what the future of Tia is. So I’m asking for help. We need people to come and have a free holiday in the Scottish Highlands, we have a cottage that sleeps four, for friends, family & volunteers. The catch? You stay at the farm 2 nights a week and look after the animals once the staff have left for the day. There won’t be a massive amount to do, just suppers for the dogs and check in on the rest of the animals. We won’t be far away if needed, but we seriously need some time off, even a couple of nights a month. We need some rest..
Since putting this post on we have had some really, unexpected, amazing news which means we are on the lookout for 2 new kennel assistants at the the farm.
In effect we are doubling the team so we can fill the empty kennels…YEAH!!
However this does not alter the fact that we need some time off.
If you want to help Tia continue, please email me deb@tia-rescue.org

A Thank You
Tia would like to thank Jo Evered for her generous donation of £183 from her recent birthday fundraiser.
This support makes a real difference to the care of the dogs here, helping us provide food, pay for vet fees, rehabilitation, and everything needed to give them a safe and comfortable life.
If you are celebrating a birthday or special occasion, or simply want to support our work, we would be incredibly grateful if you considered setting up a fundraiser or donating in a similar way. Every contribution, large or small, helps us continue providing the best possible care for the greyhounds with us.
We would also again like to thank Will Stewart who ran the London Marathon for Tia last Sunday.
We managed to smash the target, and donations are still open here!
Knaresborough Pet Day – Bank Holiday Monday – 4th May!
We will be hosting a Tia stall at Knaresborough Pet Day.

If you are looking for something to do, why not come along and say hello?
There will be a range of animal charity stalls, a fun dog show, plus food and drink available, all set in the beautiful surroundings of Knaresborough House.
Knaresborough Pet Day: 10:30 – 4:30
Knaresborough House, High Street, Knaresborough
Sale of Easter Hardmuir Farm
As you will have seen earlier this week, we’ve made the difficult decision to put the farm up for sale due to ongoing financial pressures, rising costs, and continued staffing challenges. Our hope is to secure an investor with a lease-back arrangement, so the animals can remain in place while giving us the stability to plan for the future, including the possibility of moving to a smaller site back in Yorkshire.

Right now, we don’t have any dogs for rehoming at the farm, and our focus is on caring for our sponsor dogs – many of whom are now elderly – as well as the other animals who call the farm home. Despite reduced staffing and necessary cost-cutting, their care and wellbeing remain our absolute priority.
We’re continuing to fundraise and support rehoming efforts, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received over the past 30 years. We truly hope to keep moving forward, and as always, we welcome any ideas or support you can offer.
For those interested in learning more about the opportunity, further details can be found via the link here.
Rehoming Stories…
Mulder
Mulder was one of the McManus dogs, rescued from his trainer’s neglect in late 2024. A nervous wreck when he arrived, we thought he was unlikely to ever be a candidate for rehoming and the sponsor dogs were all ready to shuffle up and make room.
But, as you know, we are never ones to shy away from a challenge. And whilst it might have taken 18 months, just look at what time, dedication and lots of Tia TLC can achieve.
Mulder is finally where he should be – home, visiting cafes and lochs, having snuggles on the sofa and spending time with his little canine friends.
Mason
When Mason came to us in January this year, he was in a bad way physically and mentally. Picked up as a stray in Barnsley, we have no idea where he had been after being dumped or rehomed by his trainer.
He last raced at Sheffield on 23rd August 2024, and many will remember the heartbreaking videos of Mason circling in his kennel. Thanks to Tia and his fabulous new family, just look at him now.
We have plenty more big black boys waiting for their chance like Mason.
Dogs Looking For Homes…
Anton
Anton is a stunning fawn boy with a few “snowflake” spots and the most beautiful eyes. He can be timid to begin with but will quickly grow in confidence once settled in a home.

He might be one of the smaller boys but still managed to notch up 10 wins. Despite his success, Anton doesn’t seem overly fond of the track and we think he’d be much happier with trips to the park and beach with his new family.
Once upon a time, he would have been snapped up but he’s already been waiting a while…
Romeo
Gorgeous Romeo has been in foster since early February but is still looking to find his Juliet. His foster family describe him as a lovely lad who is more than ready to settle. Romeo is a confident and happy four-year-old who is very friendly, loves a fuss and enjoys meeting new people.

He walks beautifully on his lead, settles well at night, is clean in the house and happy when left for a few hours. Romeo lives happily with another male hound, shows polite interest in other breeds and would make a wonderful addition to a family.
A fabulous boy who will be a wonderful addition to someone’s family.
Aaron
Aaron is a stunning two-year-old blue boy, weighing in at less than 30kg and on the smaller side for a male. What he may lack in size, he makes up for in enthusiasm and energy. Affectionately nicknamed Zebedee by our volunteers, Aaron bounces his way through life.

A beautiful boy who might benefit from an active home and someone who understands he’s really just an exuberant and bouncy baby who needs time to learn the retirement ropes.
If you would like to give a home to a Tia hound – be it permanent or foster – please get in touch at rehoming@tia-rescue.org, making sure to leave your phone number in the email
We request a minimum donation of £350 to adopt a Tia hound
Sandy
And finally this week, here’s sponsor dog Sandy, enjoying his favourite pastime… laying in the sun.
Oh Sandy…

These past 4 years have been incredibly difficult for the Charity.. with staffing problems at the farm and massive rising costs.
Me and Bob have had to make some really tough decisions.
We have no dogs for rehoming here at the farm anymore, we have just the 13 sponsor dogs. Most of which are old and frail. We also have all the other animals, the horses, goats, 2 sheep, 2 cats and the doves..They will continue to live the life of luxury that they demand on a daily basis.
We have no staff in the kennels at all during the week and only minimal on the yard. We are cutting costs wherever we can in an attempt to survive.
We are still actively fundraising and rehoming back in Yorkshire..thanks to you all.
We have made the difficult decision to try and sell the farm to an investor, with a lease back. This will ensure that these animals are safe for now and can stay put.
If we do find an investor this will free up cash to buy a smaller place back down in Yorkshire. The animals will have a safeguard if anything happens to me or Bob and hopefully the Charity will continue….
The move to Scotland was absolutely the right thing to do. We could have been in a far worse place if we hadn’t.
As always thanks to all our supporters that have been with us over the past 30 years. I really hope that Tia can continue and if you have any ideas at all moving forward…please get in touch.
Thank you…..Deb & Bob

William Stewart is fundraising for Tia Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue

Apr 24, 2026 | News
First published almost twenty years ago and now available digitally for the first time, “A Decade of Dogs” is a frank and at times emotional insight into the day-to-day running of Tia Rescue, and the hounds at the heart of it all.

The book explores the greyhound itself – the breed’s history and the harsh realities of their lives after racing – before taking you through the founding of the charity, the challenges, and the setbacks. Woven throughout are the stories that make it all worthwhile: the adopters, the fosterers, the volunteers… and of course the dogs whose lives were changed.

Rehoming Stories – Rhys
From stray kennels to Scotland.
Since being picked up as a skinny stray towards the end of last year, gorgeous Rhys has been on quite a journey. He now lives with a wonderful family in Scotland where he is quite rightly spoilt rotten. Without Tia, Rhys’ future would have looked very different. He recently went back to say hello and thank you to his Auntie Deb (last 2 photos).
It’s thanks to you, our supporters, that Rhys’ ending was a happy one. From his foster families to his adopters and everyone in between.

Woody
Last week, we said our goodbyes to sponsor dog Woody.

We are fairly sure Woody never saw a track. He came off the van that morning at Mill Race and viewed us all with deep suspicion. We gave him a shot at the title, but he soon legged it back up the drive. Woody’s nerves were in shreds, cowering at the back of the pen in case we had anymore bright ideas.
Woody’s life turned around the day he met Maha. It is impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other. Similarly fragile in temperament, their bond grew. Totally inseparable, they simply lived for each other, and it was difficult to find an image without the Maha photobomb. It was enough to make a divorce lawyer weep. As ever, thanks to those who supported the two lovebirds, long after they fell out of fashion.
As you know. we lost Maha last backend and like most old souls, he simply accepted her parting. Woody became a little quieter, but he adapted and tried to move on with Kiona. Vasco came back from the dead and ordered her home, so that put an end to that. These last four months he has been in the house with Lana and it has been touch and go which would leave us first. He had commandeered the second best bed and worked out exactly where to stand to be first in line for the breaded ham. Sainsburys. Finest! Three of!
The steroids had bought him a little time but ultimately the cancer won the fight.
Woody tore off towards the Rainbow Bridge last Friday. “Sorry guys, I got to go see about a girl.”
Waiting there was a blonde. A honey blonde. Checking her lippy.
He didn’t look back once.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored him over the years.
Wills London Marathon Fundraiser
Only one week to go until Will Stewart runs the London Marathon for Tia. He has currently raised an amazing £1510 – can we crack £2k before race next weekend?! Support him here.
Here is the last update from Will himself, talking about his preparation as the day draws nearer…
“Unlike the last couple of updates where everything was going swimmingly and I was hitting half marathon PB week after week my confidence has taken a bit of a hit. In mid March we had some bad news that took away all motivation and then at the point of forcing myself back into my training shoes a 24 hour sickness bug knocked me for 6 and it was another week before energy levels returned.
A 16 week training programme is a long time for everything to go well, so a few dips are to be expected. While most runners will be starting their taper now (reducing their mileage) I will squeeze 1 more long run in this Sunday, more for a psychological boost than anything.
The bank holiday weekend was full of running though, 20 miles on Monday through an incredibly busy Hebden Bridge, a 19 minute Halifax parkrun which is a tough course and marshalling the new Halifax 10k hence the photo with our easter bunny (MBE) tail runner. With all that, some of the mojo has already returned.
My next update will be from sunny Spain as we take on the Magaluf 10k the week before London“.

Jim (or Jimmy as he prefers to be known!) went to his new home last week.
Here’s his journey… from the first time Tia met him, to walks with our volunteers, heading up to the East of Scotland into foster and finally… after months of waiting… finding his new home on the West Coast in walking distance of the beach! Be happy Jimmy lad, you really deserve this!
Thank you to his wonderful new family and fabulous foster parents. He is one lucky Greyhound boy!

Driller (Salacres Driller)
born 22.6.21
Logan’s brother and off to the races with him this afternoon. Ten wins under his belt and as beautiful with it. Likes girls. Tough as teak and no trouble in the kennels. Driller is the dog who would kennel safely with the bitches.
A nice kind dog, but he is off to work now. Driller has heard he is racing against 5 bitches.
Try and look cool Driller. Play hard to get.
“Driller is fondly known as Drill. He is a medium size lad with the longest, pointiest face and a slightly overbite that just screams adorable. He is related to Pacino but with a darker brindle coat and chocolate eyes. Driller is ever so friendly and sniffy – so interested in me and lovely to walk“

Salacres Logan
born 22.6.2021
Drillers brother, and equally beautiful. Off to the races in tomorrow to see if he can add to his tally of 18 wins. Working lads don’t have time to chat and last week he was robbed. It is fair to say though that he is coming to the end of his career and ……it’s time!
Logan has around 100 races under his belt and still earning his corn. We hear that he is a nice calm steady dog but probably would not want to be homed with another dog. Likes girls though.
Here’s what we have learned since he came on our radar…
“Logan is a medium/large boy who is mainly white with a black mask, black patches, cute smattering of black spots on his nose and handsome brown eyes. He is quite the ladies man but not so keen on some of the other males. He is a really people friendly lad and a pleasure to walk. He is very nosey, interested in what’s going on around him and wants to investigate. He is also up for a cuddle and a good Greyhound lean on you the minute he gets a chance”

Cannon Hall Walk – this weekend!
We will be back at Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, near Barnsley with our Tia fundraising stall and Tia Walk this Sunday 12th April.

The stall will be open all day from 10am. The walk starts at 11am from the stall (meet about 10.30am) and lasts about 1 hour.
30 Years of Tia – “Bobby Connor: My First Greyhound”
“1995: So over the next six years and countless dogs taken home from the Police Station, or retrieved from the pounds, it had become a bit of a regular occurrence. It was collies at that time.
One fateful day, the 2nd of February 1995 to cut a long story short, my career was over. It wasn’t helped by my colleague who ran off when he saw the sword being wielded at us. Well what do you expect from a guy who’s first name was that of a yellow mustard.
I was off for quite a while. Eric and my two boxer dogs, Buster and Betty were sick of being walked up and down the hillside. Then by chance I came across an Irish man with a beautiful blue and white greyhound called Bobby, he had some more in stables behind the tip in Sowerby Bridge. He hadn’t the heart to put this one down as he was so well behaved. What?
Several visits and conversations with this guy and I knew where I was heading, and it was to Askern Greyhound Stadium. I wanted to find out about these dogs. So off I went….I had no idea what to expect or what to do so I put a fiver on a tiny little brindle girl, Little Tara. The guy at the side of me smirked…..she’s no chance love.
Well she bloody well had. She barged all the dogs out of the way on the last bend and won, fiery little thing she was. And that was that.
The next day I went back down to the stables behind the tip and took home Bobby Connor. The most beautiful blue and white greyhound I had ever seen.
I did go back to work but everything had changed. I also began to go to the tracks with the Irish guy….I didn’t really like it, but I liked the greyhounds. A lot…..
So I started saving greyhounds and in return, they saved me…. Deb”
Give It Up For Tia Rescue
A few weeks ago we launched our “Give It Up for Tia challenge!

The idea is simple… think of a small weekly treat that you could give up and donate the money you would have spent to Tia instead! Romeo here recently had a visit with the vet, during which he gave up something very precious.
And, if you’ve not joined up yet, click here to find out more and set up your donation. Giving up one coffee, slice of cake or glass of wine won’t make a difference to YOUR life but it will make a difference to the lives of beautiful dogs.
Izzy
Tia dog Izzy turned two last week. Here’s a bit about her, from her long-term foster mum…
“Batshit and being picked on by her littermates. Un-named. Wired to the moon. So read the notes on Tia’s database. Izzy’s breeder/trainer rang us to prevent an escalating situation. At five months old, Izzy wasn’t thriving like a normal puppy. Her siblings were doling out some alarming treatment and it was felt best to get her out of Dodge asap.
There were no shortages of possible takers for a squirmy, licky, bitey pup but then I realised something wasn’t right. I pushed the resident lodgers further up the sofa and made the appointment. An MRI confirmed that Izzy has a lesion on the brain and this was affecting her co-ordination and balance. A special home was sought and Izzy found herself flying up the A1 six weeks later, as neatly as you please. Sadly it didn’t work out and a week later, Izzy was enjoying the scenery from the other side of the motorway.
Another special home was sought but by then I was a dead duck. Izzy wasn’t going anywhere. Millie and Ely, my greyhounds, accept her completely and keep a watchful, if sometimes despairing eye on the family clown. They resemble class monitors and I sometimes catch a fleeting glance between the two of them as they observe her antics. Youth of today!
There are a few dark clouds on the horizon and there’s a curious development on her right hind leg. We’ll meet that trouble when it comes. Meanwhile we three are striving to give her the best life we can. Undoubtedly she is the happiest dog I have ever seen, full of beans and joie de vivre. Hilarious at times and a big favourite at the tin rattling. Izzy is our family’s daily Christmas present with slightly crumpled wrapping paper.
Happy Birthday my little sausage. I absolutely adore you. Mum (Jess)”

Dogs looking for a home – Annie
Who can resist her little face?

Bailey, aka Orphan Annie, STILL needs a home and family to call her own.

For more info on this absolute poppet, please visit her profile here, or email rehoming@tia-rescue.org
Dogs looking for a home – Lilly
Lovely Lilly has a booty to rival any A list celeb and our gorgeous pocket-rocket would not look out of place in the line up for Destiny’s Child…
- Michelle, can you handle this?
- Beyoncé, can you handle this?
- Lilly, can you handle this?
- I don’t think you can handle this!

But whilst Lilly might be a sassy little lady, she is certainly not hard to handle. She’s a friendly, sociable girl who walks beautifully on her lead and doesn’t bat an eye-lid when her kennel-mate, Teff, is being a bit of a fan boy.
Soon to be 6, she’s fed up of being a single lady and is hoping to soon find a family to cherish her & spoil her rotten. A very special girl.
If you would like to adopt a Tia dog, please get in touch at rehoming@tia-rescue.org, and please remember to leave your phone number in the email! We ask for a minimum donation of £350 to adopt a Tia hound.
Goings on…
The dogs, waiting patiently for their home cooked dinner and Kongs for an evening snack, as it blew a gale outside…. lucky dogs indeed.

And what of Norman, you ask? He was having a snooze…big lump.

Rehoming
Spring always marks a time of new beginnings and March has certainly delivered it’s share of fresh starts and happy endings.
Cedric, Mason, Lady, Bruno, George all found themselves a sofa. Also rehomed was pony Suzanna, who trotted off to pastures new after Tia were asked to help.
Recently rehomed – Mason
Mason is settling in well! His mom says it’s like having a small horse in the house. What a good boy.

Be happy big fella.
Recently rehomed – George
Gorgeous George went to his new home last Saturday, and has taken to his new life like a duck to water! Until now, George had only ever lived in kennels, but he’s already proving how quickly and easily these beautiful dogs can adjust to life in a home.

His new family tell us… “He’s doing so well. He’s already carrying his toys around & slept all the way through last night”
Dogs looking for homes – Kelsey, Kathleen, Arthur
George might have bagged himself a home, but his siblings – Kelsey, Kathleen, and Arthur – are still looking! George’s mates Lilly and Teff are also waiting for their chance. Like George, they are all lovely, sociable, well-adjusted dogs who we expect would settle quickly into home & family life.
Black beauty Kelsey is a little cracker who loves doing twirls on her lead when you first set off! However she soon settles and is then an absolute pleasure to walk. She’s an affectionate girl who loves a fuss.

She shares a kennel with Arthur who tells her off for taking up too much room in bed. But Kelsey’s not bothered. Arthur’s “complaints” go straight over her head and when he’s not looking… she just stretches out those lovely long legs a little bit more! A girl needs her beauty sleep after all!
Read more about Kelsey and the others below…
Kelsey
Kathleen
Arthur
Lilly
Teff
Dogs looking for homes – Jimmy
And here’s our lovely Scottish lad, Jimmy.

This boy loves being part of a home and is more than ready to find his forever family. Jim a sweet natured boy who loves people & is always delighted to see you.
- He gives the best hugs and kisses
- He is clean in the house and has settled well in to his foster family’s routine
- Jim loves to play with his toys and collect slippers!
- He loves travelling in the car and doing zoomies!
- Jim will settle when left for a few hours
- He lives happily with another male hound and has been friendly with other breeds
- Jim will make a great family pet and could live with sensible, older children
- Jim can get worried by loud noises, and will need his own safe & quiet space
In the words of his foster Mum “whoever adopts Jimmy will get a smashing new member of the family. This wee boy deserves the best”
Thanks to all involved in rehoming, and here’s to more happy tails as we head further into Spring!
Maybe April could be the month you decide to open your heart to one of our precious hounds? If so, please get in touch, at rehoming@tia-rescue.org. Please leave your phone number in the email.
We request a minimum donation of £350 to adopt a Tia hound.
Lola – good news!
Many of you will remember Lindrick Loner… she last raced at Sheffield on the 19th October 2020. She was then given away/ rehomed by her trainer. She spent the next three years churning out lurcher pups on an allotment in Sheffield. We eventually got her two years ago.
About eighteen months ago, she bagged herself the perfect home with Percy. Sadly Percy died a year later, but his place was quickly filled with Percy2… (Rami, one of the dogs chucked in the canal in Leeds).
Just as Mason was heading off to pastures new, she collapsed at her home.
200 miles later, a stop off at Conan vets in Dingwall and back to Tia at 10pm… poor Lola was paralysed down her right hand side. The prognosis not good. Iona from Moray Coast came out that Wednesday and we both jumped with delight when her right foot twitched.
48 hours later, and she was up and in the garden, albeit wobbly, and we’re glad to say she has continued to recover well (after a few ups and downs). Another four more weeks of kennel rest and hopefully she can go home.
It is a common injury in greyhounds, and thankfully some of them make a full recovery. She is a lovely old girl, and is happy for the time being back in the kennels.
Fundraising Events – Cannon Hall Walk, 12th April
A huge thankyou to everyone who came to our stall at Doncaster Lakeside Shopping Village last weekend! We managed to raise over £500.

Our next Tia event is our walk/ get together and stall at Cannon Hall, near Barnsley next Sunday 12th April. We hope to see you all there!

Yes we are…it has finally arrived.
Despite numerous pleas for staff and help, me and Bob are now at crisis point. We never get a day off and I’ve had enough.
We do have a very small team here at the farm and a few brilliant volunteers, but it just isn’t enough.
So i have made the decision that the dogs we have here for rehoming are going back down South to another rescue…Thankyou.
We will still have 18 dogs here, the majority sponsor dogs. We still have the horses and the 4 goats, 2 sheep and 2 cats.
We will try our very best to look after them….
Alison and her small team are still rehoming dogs in Yorkshire, direct from the trainers.
The Charity IS NOT giving up…
