Continuing with National Volunteer Week; we give a huge thanks to the volunteers at LifeScan Inverness, who have done an amazing job repainting our old chicken shed.
With the old nest boxes removed yesterday (courtesy of Deb & Bob!), members of the LifeScan team came down today and did a brilliant job breathing some new life into the building.

It has been brought to my attention that it is National Volunteer week! An ideal time to thank those who have stuck with us even after moving over 400 miles from our core team. Also, we are grateful for the support from our new volunteers who keep the wheels oiled on a daily basis. I cannot think of another rescue so blessed with back-room boys and girls. Some have been with Tia since the Sewage Farm, forced to drive through hysterical nutters to get to the kennels. Others risked their chassis on that minefield of a lane at Moorside or braved the travellers at Doncaster.
Being so rural now in the Highlands, we don’t attract the same numbers of helpers, and we would not be able to carry on without those who stick with us. Tia is still active “down south” and a dozen dogs have found homes this year through our new initiative. The trainers are very grateful for our/their help and have forged friendships with our supporters. As one trainer put it, “I just hand them a list of what can go out and leave them to it.” We learned of three more ex-racers packing their bags only this morning.
A special mention to the fund-raising team. They have caught the reins and taken over the running of the shows and events. I personally cannot thank you enough for doing this. These events are our shop window and let’s be honest, it was never my strong suit! The sight of the tombola made me break out in a cold sweat and I never got the hang of the tent. As for smiling at the customers and answering the one hundredth question about cats, well you know the rest. Thanking for spotting where we were failing and saving the day.
A new team has formed whist I wasn’t looking. The ladies who have taken over the promotion of those in need of a home. Some of you have noticed a fresher style in our write ups. We couldn’t go on saying “she’ll fit in your top pocket” could we. Thanks girls.
I am grateful to the local volunteers who have pointed us towards to reliable tradesmen, suppliers and the like. Be it sourcing marrow bones or establishing contacts for carpets, Tia would not have been up and running so quickly without your local knowledge. A few more dog walkers would be welcome. The feedback for the individual dog is extremely useful.
The ability to push a button on my phone and know one of you will step in is priceless. Be it transporting dogs, dropping off sardines or striding fearlessly into the jaws of a shady allotment shed, I thank you so much.

Upcoming Events
This Sunday 25th May we will be holding a fundraising stall at Lakeside Village Outlet, Doncaster DN4 5PH, 10am to 4pm. We’d love to see some of you there. The outlet is dog-friendly, with many of the shops also allowing dogs inside.
We have a number of upcoming events in the Yorkshire area
21st June – Wakefield Trinity Walk Shopping Centre
12th July – Kirkstall Festival, Leeds
26th July – Avril’s Tia Coffee Morning in Meltham, Huddersfield

Scottish Fundraisers and Supporters Needed

Dot and Jack
Thankfully Dot and Jack have recovered from their recent falls.
Sadly, it’s not all good news. Dot has got kidney disease, she’s been having tests on and off for a while..
Old, old dogs…
Ozzy
We’ve had an update from Ozzy’s new mum and dad, proving how quickly and easily most Greyhounds settle in to their new homes!
“It’s only been 4 weeks but Ozzy (was Oscar) has settled in brilliantly! He is a proper sun worshipper and he’s done so well training at the dog park and being braver with other dogs near him. We’ve learnt to be super careful making our tuna sandwiches around him! And he’ll shoot through like a bullet if he hears any packet being rustled in the kitchen! It’s so lovely to see his personality come through – he’s playful, stubborn and obsessed with his bed! He’s been a fantastic addition to our lives and we can’t thank you enough. All our family and friends have fallen in love with him too”

A thank you
Followers of the FB page will have read about April Stewart, who ran the London Marathon for Tia Rescue and Samaritans a few weeks ago.
She raised £2,058 in total, smashing her £750 target.
A massive well done on a fantastic achievement, and of course a huge thank you.
Old dogs… creaky joints
With so many old dogs and dogs that have old injuries, we use Riaflex joint supplement daily. We have run out.
If anyone would like to order us some we think direct from Riaflex is the cheapest. Langley (above) and the rest of our veritable pensioners would be very grateful.

Hope and Faith
Meet Hope (black) and Faith (fawn). Followers of the FB page will already be acquainted with these two.
When these photos were taken, they didn’t even have names, and their future was uncertain.
Now look at them; they have settled very quickly into their foster families, and are ready to be rehomed!
Hope is small greyhound size. Like a typical greyhound, she seems quite lazy and loves sleeping, cuddles and belly rubs. Faith is thought to be a Saluki Lurcher; inquisitive and full of energy, but loves to cuddle and lay on you.
Both girls are around 2 years old, and need to be moving on to their next chapter as soon as possible. Please contact Deb on 07974 960684 (daytime) if you can offer either girl a home. A minimum donation of £350 is requested to adopt any of our hounds.

Rusty
We would bet the ranch this is Fern’s brother. Rusty is a stray that has come from the same place. The reunion was like something out of Long-Lost Family. Rusty is about 18 months old and will paying a visit to the vet shortly. We haven’t told him.
Meanwhile let’s enjoy the dance. Tissues are advised.

Fern
Fern is a young Lurcher (around 12-18m). She is sweet, affectionate, cuddly, cheeky and full of beans. She is currently in foster in Yorkshire to recover from an injury she sustained by accidentally running in to something and she desperately needs a forever home to call her own, to allow her healing to continue with lots of TLC.
“Fern is energetic and playful, and can sometimes be cheeky. She has very puppy like tendencies, so just needs time to learn and grow up in a home of her own. She is very social with other dogs and loves to play, especially with little dogs, although she is respectful of their boundaries when they tell her, and will adjust her play accordingly. She also loves people and loves playtimes and then loves to cuddle up on the sofa with you after. Sometimes during playtime she can get excited and a bit mouthy, but this is generally gentle and she stops when told and redirects onto a toy. This has already massively improved in the week I have had her. As much as Fern loves to play she is also a typical sighthound and loves a good nap. She is happy sleeping on her own beds and also does like to cuddle up with you on the sofa/on your lap and fall asleep. As long as she has had a walk and her food, she is happy to be at home with you and loves to lounge around.
Fern is a quick learner and has picked up toilet training like a dream and now will tell me when she needs to go out by pacing/whining and waiting at the door. She has done well with her walks, and is generally okay on the lead although can pull sometimes. She also gets excited when seeing other dogs running and sometimes jumps around on her back legs in excitement. Again this has already improved massively with routine and training and the more she gets out and about the more this is settling.
Fern is very polite with her food, and she is able to be fed around my other 3 dogs with no problems. She will eat her own portion and not pester the others for theirs, and is not upset if they have a look at her food whilst she is eating either. It is the same with her toys/chews/treats- she is more than happy to share with no guarding issues at all.
Fern has already been in a home with a cat where she wouldn’t settle with their cat, however she is currently living with 2 cats with me. She is interested and will chase if they run, however she has been batted a few times by my cats and is learning/improving with them. I think Fern would be best in a home without cats, although if there is someone with a sighthound savvy cat, who has introduced dogs with prey drive to cats before then she may be able to live with them. It would just need to be the right circumstances!
Fern is coming with me to work at the vets every day currently, and she is generally very good, although occasionally gets a bit vocal but this is normally when she needs the toilet. She is very good for her dressing changes and handling in general, allowing us to flush and clean her wound and replace her dressings with no problems. (This is a lot more than a lot of dogs would allow!). In terms of leaving Fern home alone I think this will take a bit of time/work as she does love to be around people. We have already started some training with this, and I think with time she will get there as she has already shown improvement in a week. And at the moment she has currently had a lot of change so it’s understandable she may be a bit confused/worried about being left whilst in a new home!
All in all Fern is an absolute sweetheart, and everyone who has met her has fallen in love with her. She is beautiful, goofy and affectionate.
If I didn’t already have 3 dogs and 2 cats I would consider offering Fern a home myself as she is honestly a sweetheart and has settled into her new routine with me very well. I think Fern will make a fabulous dog for whoever offers her a forever home, they just need to be prepared to do a little bit of training in the early days with her to help her to settle and find her feet.”

Marley (Read The Rules)
born June 2019
Like so many, a plain black dog looking for a soft place to fall.
Veteran of 111 races and winner of twenty of them. Poor Marley got caught up in a very rough race back in March and ended his career by showing his displeasure! He had won in some style only the fortnight before. Time he hung up his muzzle anyway.
“Marley is a lovely boy who we had the pleasure of taking to a local park today.
He travelled well in the car – jumped straight in and laid down for the journey. It was all new when we arrived, and Marley was excited when he saw other dogs to begin and did bark with excitement on a few occasions (what dog wouldn’t), but never pulled on his lead, despite other dogs being off theirs. We saw a horse, which he stood aside for and watched pass by at a distance.
By the end of our walk, Marley wasn’t really interested in what else was going on in the park, and even laid down when we stopped for a rest/photos! He loved a treat!
Jumped straight back in the car and laid down for the journey home.”
Marley is with us in in Scotland and is becoming a firm favourite with us all.
