BE WARE was her racing name….born in August 2016….tiny little black greyhound girl.
She had a brief career at Romford, 35 races in total. D Mullins was the registered trainer.
She was a good racer, Open Class which is the best class with 5 wins under her belt…
The last recorded race was in September 2019. She probably went to Askern after that, bearing in mind that 4 years later with an old fracture to her wrist and obvious signs of having pups, she ended up in the stray kennel at Sheffield.
Bit thin and scabby….
Thanks to Becky for collecting her from the stray kennel, fetching her up to Tia and then taking her all the way back down the following day….one of the quickest failed fosterers of all time.
Welcome to your forever home Betty…

We have a lot of good people who help keep this Charity going, most of them don’t want medals or gold stars, they just want to help and are passionate about Tia. This is just a snapshot of what happened over the 2 weeks spanning the dogs shows, here and back in Halifax.
The show in Halifax had been booked, the stalls were manned, rosettes waiting for their proud owners, judges in attendance, the merchandise was out and we were ready to go. Clearly that is the short version.
I had come down the day before with Steer and Marble, their new owners were very happy, the dogs not so sure. Me, I was a wreck, I don’t know if it was because Steer had left us after so long or if it was because I was back in my home town, the Calder Valley. Fifty years of my life spent there and twenty years of the Charity..
It was however lovely to see lots of old friends at the show and the dogs of course. The rain didn’t deter us we just hid under the trees and waited for it to ease. It was a wonderful day.
On the way back up to Scotland I met a trainer at Ferrybridge, I wish I’d had a £1 for every time I’ve done that and Wyatt and Dina were whisked up the A1…
A few days later, Becky was on her way up after picking up a stray greyhound girl from the pound, Jess was on her way up after picking one of our greyhound girls up from a home in Leeds, she hadn’t settled…via Scotch Corner where she picked up Emma, the Pickering Shop manager. Darren & Ange were also on their way up from Rotherham, Kenzie from Newcastle and Cecilia, who had been at the Halifax show, the day after completing the Three Peaks, was heading up on the bus…
The show in Inverness was thrown together, the stalls were manned, rosettes waiting for their proud owners, judges in attendance, the merchandise was out and we were ready to go. Clearly that is the short version.
It was a blustery day and by 11.30am I could have cried again….then they came….car, after car, after car. It was so busy the ring was 3 deep at one point. Over 250 dogs entered into the classes. It was another lovely day, a new sort of day.
Then it was done and Becky headed off home, the shortest failed fosterer probably of all time and the stray little black greyhound girl, now called Betty was whisked back down the motorway to her new home…No more the husband said….yeah right…
The next day Jess set off back down, with Tucker. He has gone, on foster, to some very good friends. Over 3 years he had been with us, please behave yourself big lad.
I want to thank all our volunteers, old and new because without you we wouldn’t be here. Whether you donate monthly, help at events, transport, recycle, computer stuff, rehome/foster dogs….whatever it is that you do, it means a massive amount.

And please don’t forget about our few loyal staff, on the farm, who are always busy, looking after these precious souls….

So the first of the dogs shows is coming up next Sunday 27th August, Savile Park, Halifax. HX1 3EW.
It is really easy to find, 10 mins off junction 24 on the M62. Straight into Halifax, turn left at the hospital and the moor is just up there.
I have attached the classes and the dogs shows will be run simultaneously, starting at 12 noon.
Chris from Donaldson’s is judging the greyhounds & lurchers

and my friend Denise, the all breeds.
We have lots of stalls, Donaldson’s, Overgate hospice, Treats 2 Sit 4, Cozy Grey’s, Clothes Hound, Thirty 2 Sheep, Hound Crafted, Greyt Exploitations, Tiny Furry Pets and of course all our own stalls.
The first prize in the raffle is a week up here…
We are also holding a baking competition….I was just looking through my old photos and I had forget that we used to do this….ps if you want to bribe the judge, me, it’s either gooseberry tart or olive bread….
We will only be selling cakes and cold drinks, but there is a fish shop nearby and if the weather is nice, why not fetch a picnic.
Also if you can fetch cash it will help, but we do have a couple of card machines…
I think that’s it….see you next weekend…Deb

Marble is terrified.

You will be fine Marble….that I promise, Tarzan will show you the ropes.
Still, there isn’t a problem with greyhound racing…is there???

My beautiful and oh so gentle and sensitive boy Chops has gone. Rescued from the vile racing industry only to be given away to a despicable and disgusting ‘woman’ who starved and neglected him. ‘Chops’ because despite of the abuse he suffered – his tail never stopped spinning like a helicopter. For just 20 short months of his otherwise miserable life – he experienced endless tender loving care – cuddles – hugs and freedom at last. Something he deserved from birth and for the whole of his natural life.
Remembering Chops – aka Wallace……..

It has been a busy few weeks, as always.
The saddest thing, apart from losing Poppy the puppy to parvo, was the loss of our beautiful shire, Ed. We had been trying for months, but the grass is so rich up here that we are having to manage the horses very carefully.
Laminitis is horrible, and whilst the little ones can recover, the Shires are just too heavy. We had to make the very sad decision to let him go, but it was the right thing to do. Only 8 years old. He was so lovely and beautiful.
After the Turners had helped demolish the old shed, their work didn’t stop there and on the way home to Leeds, they met up with a good friend, Joanne who wrote Pim’s Books, and gave her Ebony. A beautiful young lurcher that we acquired up here….A cracking little dog, lets hope she behaves better than Pim…
Then we had Marble brought in from her trainer in Sunderland. A beautiful brindle greyhound girl. Very timid, but she is coming too already. Just gone 3 years old. She had 32 races, she wasn’t very good.
Then we have George, a big brindle boy….he had 150 races at Doncaster, the last one in August last year. He had been sat in kennels ever since. He was sprung by someone who felt sorry for him, as he was underweight and miserable.
He is now in a foster home…Just given away by his trainer, underweight, needs a dental and castrating….whose paying for that then? Oh yeah…..Us.
So there you go….normal sort of stuff…

Where to begin…It feels a bit like Groundhog Day, this is the 3rd time we have demolished buildings, at different farms, to build new kennel blocks. I have to say we have got it down to a tee.
To cut a very long story short, we have managed to raise £79,300 through the Brick Appeal. We have been pledged £35,000 from a grant giving charity.
So that leaves us around £60,000 short. However we are selling a field to our neighbour so that will also help.
Whilst the greyhound industry is in crisis with probably thousands of dogs backing up in kennels, it doesn’t take much working out what is going to happen to the majority of those poor souls. There are many more Rebecca Perkins out there, but obviously they are trying to keep it all under wraps.
I had a very good friend on the phone yesterday, from another Independent rescue, crying down the phone. The amount of dogs she has to help, the pressure from the trainers to offload, is immense. And of course the huge financial pressure.
They will blame the cost of living crisis when they destroy the greyhounds. And make no mistake they will.
We too are under intense financial pressure and I honestly don’t know how long we can carry on, the only reason we are still here is because we moved and huge thanks to my friend Cynthia when she left us her legacy.
And obviously massive, massive thanks to everyone who has and still are supporting Tia.
These past 2 years have been incredibly hard and we wouldn’t be here without you all.
And as for the pathetic ex member of staff who reported us to the council earlier in the year, as the dogs had pyjamas on, yes really. It is people like you and the Rebecca Perkins of this world and the poor, poor dogs, that keep me going.
