Myrtle… relaxing while the sun shines

Myrtle… relaxing while the sun shines

Here’s Myrtle, enjoying sunbathing after the long period of rain. She’s not enjoying the lock down though; now the weather has improved she wants to go walkies more often.

Just enjoy the sun whilst it’s shining, Myrtle!

Could you spare the cost of a cup of coffee?

Dear Tia Supporter,

You will be aware that with the ongoing health concerns and unprecedented restrictions related to COVID-19, we are all in a very different world than any of us had ever envisioned. Yet even in these unprecedented times, our dogs and horses still need to be cared for.

As a registered charity dedicated to the welfare of our animals, we are trying really hard to keep things as normal as possible so that we can continue to focus on feeding, sheltering and tending to them. However, over the last few days, the stark reality of what the next few weeks, and possibly next few months, will mean to us is hitting home hard.

About half of Tia’s income is generated by our shops, yet we have now had to close them all and we have no idea when we will be able to reopen them. Although the Government is doing much to help businesses, the help for charities is not yet clear and we do not know what help they will provide, what form it will take, how and to which charities it will go and how quickly it will be done.

In the short term, we face having to make some difficult decisions unless we can get help to keep us going during this unparalleled disruption.

How you can help: Why not send us the price of a cup of coffee?

Cafes, restaurants and most coffee shops are closed. If you can spare just £10/month, (the price of just one medium cup of coffee a week), until the Coronavirus disruptions are over, it could make all the difference to us and to all our animals.

(Even if you are unable to make a regular donation, please consider making a single donation – every penny helps feed and look after our animals).

To donate online, simply follow the link below

https://www.tia-rescue.org/donate/

Don’t forget that if you are a UK taxpayer you can Gift Aid your donation, simply by checking the Gift Aid box in the online form. If you are sending a cheque please add a note requesting a gift aid form with your email address and one can be emailed to you.

Are there any other ways you can help?

As we all have to deal with a world where less shops are open, we will probably all make more use of on-line shopping than before. But even this can be used to help us without any cost to yourselves.

Many on-line retailers will donate 0.5% to 1% of the net price of a purchase to a charity of your choice, at no cost to you. Please check out the retailers below and consider helping us by choosing Tia Rescue as your preferred charity:

Rosie’s progress in her new home

Rosie’s progress in her new home

We’ve had an update on the progress of Rosie’s (was Rollie) in her new home:

It wasn’t plain sailing in the beginning, but Rosie is a wonderful addition to our family. Her favourite spot from day one is laying at the side of my husband’s chair in lounge. She loves her food and thrives on routine.

She likes a quick walk, then home. She even starts nudging us if her walk is too long, she then likes food and sleep.

She is such a gentle kind soul along with our other grey “Frank” (she’s the boss!)

Thank you for helping me out with the first few teething issues, and more importantly the non-judgmental attitude you had towards us. You never tried to guilt trip us or apply pressure, when we didn’t think it was working with her.

I’m so glad we took the time and gave her a chance we love her so much!

Indra settling in to her new home

Indra settling in to her new home

As many of you are aware we have some incredibly intelligent and adept greyhounds come through our doors. Indra is one of those rehomed last weekend and has provided us with an update of how she’s settling in….

Hi Deb,

I am settling very well into my new home. Found this sun lounger out yesterday so took advantage of the good weather. My new Mum said I was unlikely to get a tan (something to do with being black!). Thank you very much for looking after me. I will do my best to continue to be a good girl and will come to visit when it is allowed.

Lots of love to you and all at Tia,

Indra. x

Circling the Wagons: Update, 23rd March

Circling the Wagons: Update, 23rd March

Once again we are in a better place because of our volunteers. Within forty-eight hours the back room girls and boys answered the call and a stream of the luckiest dogs in the world went down the drive. I have never been so happy to see the backsides of so many greyhounds.

I would like to update everyone about the ongoing situation. Tia has a skeleton staff at the kennels and I am personally in awe at their commitment. The shops have closed which is terrifying. It was gut wrenching laying people off but when you are in the same boat as McDonalds, Nandos, and Spoons, you know the proverbial has hit the fan.

Askern track closed on Friday and four dogs were promptly discarded after the last race. They are safe here now, but be in no doubt this crisis is seismic for the industry. Open racing will finish very soon and I suspect the graders wont be long after. Make no mistake many racers will be dumped. The pounds will be ringing soon. This is massive. When die hard old trainers are questioning if this is the end, you know it is serious.

We’ll keep you up to date regularly but for now you lot on your holidays……

Pippa, Rolo, Mocha, Indra, Karah and Peron…adopted

Currant, Jacqui, Faith, Shuna, Beasley, Duade, Audrey, Indra, Mac, Lona, Dot, Bernarray, Strudel, Jim, Samah, Yannika and Lorette, Ramble and Polly Pocket have gone together (holding hands)… best behaviour all of you. My eyes are on you! As for the rest, we have plenty more if anyone has room at the inn. We are constantly watching the food stocks. The only thing that stops a greyhound from eating is death and everyone is very much alive, thank you very much.

Gratitude isn’t enough but it is all I have for now. The strength Tia gains from its backstop of support is incalculable. We have survived break-ins, theft, pestilence, trolling, financial meltdown, litigation, physical attacks and plain wholesome exhaustion throughout the years. We haven’t fallen yet.

This I know, other rescues would give their right arm for you.

Thank you

Deb..and all at Tia

With all the madness that is going on we have had to reduce staff here at the farm.

I will do a full update later, but if any of our previous adopters would like to foster a dog it will be massively appreciated…..

These 6 came in this week and i am hoping that we don’t have to stop taking in the urgent ones….

Update regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Update regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

As per the latest government guidelines we have made the decision to close the Tia kennels and site to visitors with immediate effect. However, we will still be rehoming dogs but BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

We have to ensure we minimise the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for all staff to maintain the support needed by all animals currently homed at Tia.

To make an appointment to rehome a dog please contact us on 01302 772935.

Thank you for your understanding in these challenging times.

Country-wide dog vomiting outbreak

There is an awful bug going around and it has been for a couple of months. It is all over the country and you can read more about it here and here.

My house dogs have all had it and no idea where they picked it up…It involves sickness and horrible diarrhea. It can last for between 2 and 5 days….and sometimes requires hospitalisation.

Just so everyone is aware….

Abandoned Greyhound Barnsley

Abandoned Greyhound Barnsley

Currant,  AKA Rafas Wee Lick. Raced at Kinsley for a brief period, was found straying in Barnsley 10 days ago in need of some serious feeding. At the height of her blessed short career Currant weighed 27kgs, whereas this morning she tripped the scales at barely 21.6kgs and let’s not forget this abandoned scrap has been eating for England for a good week.
We would like to thank the kennel where she has been kept safe for calling us and also all of you out there for your donations and concern. Angela, you are a star.
Quite simply we have no idea where she has been kept. If she has been bred from the litter wasn’t registered and frankly, her form was too dreadful for even Mr Micawber to discover a glimmer of potential. Currant was whelped in 2013. Where the hell has she been? Anyone?
Maybe the rehoming officer that she is registered to could enlighten us? Mark?

Update from Donaldson’s Vets. Dot is brighter today, she has had no more vomiting. She is still on a drip and antibiotics. She is a bit brighter and is eating.
Fingers crossed for this old girl…

My heart is breaking tonight.
Over 12 yrs old. She has been in this state for years.
Sore bleeding feet from horrendously overgrown nails, filthy ears and rotten teeth. How can this happen? Poor poor girl.
As I write she is being rushed to the vets.
Neglected. Greyhound welfare issues never go away, neither do we.
Please help us help her
Please share
I hope she survives…Please Donate to help abandoned Greyhound Dot
