Ezra’s Story

Ezra’s Story

I am writing with the sad sad sad news that our beautiful darling, quirky, foppish baby cuddling Ezra was put to sleep yesterday. He was 13 years and 7 months. Devastating decision to make but his condition and quality of life dropped off so quickly last week it felt like the kindest thing – and the vet agreed when they came to our house. He went to sleep peacefully for the last time yesterday afternoon having his ears rubbed.

We brought Ramon home from TIA on his 4th Birthday (6th May). We’d seen him in Hebden Bridge and then picked him up from Wroot. He was in the overflow barn in a crate and looked so very sad there was hardly any light in his eyes. We were so worried about him we brought him back for you to check him over because we thought he had mange (turned out us rookie owners didn’t know what a kennel coat was!!) But we continued to want him to be happy so we picked up Lumin for some girl company a few months later. He never changed, he was always his own dog – didn’t feel the need to please you, rarely wagged his tail – but we knew he was happy from the light that had come back on in his eyes and the way he roached and let his tum be rubbed (often). He had a 50 yard stare – usually through the glass doors to the sitting room when you were in his spot on the sofa. And he was really very clever at creating a diversion to get you up and then he’d be in like flyn! Clever boy, he knew what he wanted. He bit my daughter twice – she didn’t learn her lesson the first time!

He taught my kids the value of caring for something before themselves, to respect him when sleeping and to enjoy the lovely walks and adventures we went on. We never made it back to his native Ireland (we talked about going often) but we managed beaches in Wales and Scotland where he ran and lolloped like a fairy in the sea. He was never any good at running, much better at finding a sofa or bed in super quick time. We loved him – he was our first greyhound. Thank you for letting us take him, he was at the heart of our family and the kids (now 14 and 17) are bereft.

We still have Blanche (now Nikita – Miss December!) with her bionic hip who is now able to take full advantage of 100% of cuddles.

The photo is when we went on a road trip to the Outer Hebrides and if you zoom in you can truly see what peace looks like on a greyhound face.

Harry (Nottingham)

Harry (Nottingham)

Harry (Salacres Harry)

Another one who could go around Towcester blindfold. Harry doesn’t appear to be impressed with the David Bailey stuff.

A forty-kilo contender who owes racing nothing.  Heart of oak and deserves his retirement. Fit as a fiddle.

Harry is with his trainer in Nottingham, who would like him in a home sooner rather than later.

Dear God, what have you got on.

Gorgeous little 26 kilo blue girl. Raced only last week and was beaten by her kennel mate. Handbags at dawn for that one. Palermo has nothing to prove, and it is time a suitable sofa was found. Racing can be a tough game when you are a fairy.

Could someone save this girl from her trainer’s fashion sense.

Pickering Shop

We may no longer be based in Yorkshire, but we are still in the area… kind of.

Our charity shop in Pickering remains open, 10 – 4 every day. The address is;

1A Market Place

Pickering

YO18 7AA

Donations are of course always welcome, and we accept a variety of items, provided they are in good, clean, saleable condition. If you are unsure whether or not we will accept your items, please ring the shop manager Emma on 07951 076674, who will help you out.

If for some reason you can’t reach the shop to drop off your items, then please get in touch with us at collect@tia-rescue.org; we may be able to organise a collection nearer to home.

And of course, there’s always… gift aid! If you are donating goods to our shop and are a UK tax payer – and your donated goods sell – we are able to claim an 25% extra on the proceeds. At no extra cost to you. Ask a member of staff when you bring in your items, and you will be provided with a gift aid declaration form to complete. You will be issued with a gift aid number, which you can then attach to your future donations every time you drop them off.

Donate

Donate

Donations are the lifeblood of any charity, and Tia Rescue is no different. We would not be here today if it wasn’t for the thousands of generous supporters over the years who have made a contribution – no matter how big or small – to help support our work. Do you want to make a single one-off donation to Tia, or maybe even set up a regular monthly donation? All of this can be done here.

Simply enter your donation type (one-off/ single), your intended total, and how often you intend to donate (if making a regular donation). After completion of checkout, you will be provided with the Tia Rescue bank details to set up the payment/ standing order your self; it’s that simple. The best part is we are not charged anything in payment processing fees; every penny goes to the animals, every penny makes a difference.

But that’s not all – if you qualify for gift aid, you can boost your donation by 25% should you be eligible. Full T&C will be provided at checkout.

Another great way to donate is by entering the Tia Monthly Lottery, which – as well as supporting us – gives you the chance to win a prize of £250!

Entry costs just £1 per number, and the winner will be drawn at the beginning of each month. Multiple entries are allowed. If you would like to enter the lottery, please follow this link.

[Gift Aid not applicable to lottery donations]

Have a Heart

Many thanks to everyone who has bought a “heart” for our Christmas tree. So far you have raised over £700, and we still have lots left (as well as room on the tree!). If there’s someone you want to remember – pet, friend, loved one – or perhaps you just want to send us Christmas greetings, then consider buying a heart for £5 here.

You may have also noticed the bags under the tree… we have 25; one each for the kennel dogs that will be here over Christmas.

Any presents will be gratefully received… they are such lucky dogs.

Tinkerbell

Our lovely little old lady, Tinkerbell, came back home on Friday. We’ve had her seven years, after a neighbour in Woodlands, Doncaster relieved the drug addict next door of her. She was kept outside in appalling conditions. She has never put a foot wrong, and has never wanted to leave, despite numerous people wanting her.

Lots of meds and TLC for her now (as well as freshly cooked chicken). You can sponsor her here.

For such a small girl, the kennels seemed so empty without her. Fingers crossed.

Trainer Banned

Neil Britton (a previous Perry Barr trainer) has been banned for life and ordered to pay £1000 for lying about the whereabouts of five greyhounds.

I seriously hope that Celtic Diva, Battling Wild, LookingForADiva, Sandy Willow and Jay’s Swift are somewhere safe, but given the dishonesty of the trainer I fear the worst…

One post on a public forum relating to this reads “These days, they tend to use the canal method.”. This so-called method must be well-known now, if they are talking about it openly.

Sick beyond words.

Website Shop

We still have lots of calendars left for sale; for those who haven’t bought one yet, here is a sneaky peek at the photos. You can buy a calendar hereWe’re also doing a deal at the moment – £17.50 for a calendar and a pack of eight Tia Rescue Christmas cards – available here.

We also have lots of greyhound dog coats – various colours and sizes available here.

Fostering

I have been talking to quite a lot of people recently who really want another dog but can’t afford the vets fees. With the absolute horror of the amount of dogs backing up in trainers kennels, I have come up with an idea.

We have 30 dogs on our site that are currently with trainers; we are steadily rehoming them, but wouldn’t it be really, really good if we could get some of these dogs into foster homes. We do have a few people who foster at the moment (thank you!), but we need more. All you need to do is provide the food, the love and we’ll sort the vets bills out.

A trainer rang me today from Essex; they have 34 dogs needing homes. It is getting very serious out there.

Jack is one such dog. This boy breaks my heart. He has very little chance of finding a home. He needs a foster home ASAP before I fetch him up here. He really needs someone to take care of him and love him.

Maybe you can help us get Jack and some of these dogs out for their first Christmas turkey? If you can help please ring 07974 960684.

Thank you.

Food Deliveries

Food Deliveries

There are so many other ways you can help Tia Rescue in addition to donating and sponsoring.

You can order food for the dogs online  – ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Pets at Home, Zooplus – they all deliver straight to the farm.

Tinned meat is always needed for the hounds!

Sponsor a dog or kennel

Perhaps you want to support Tia Rescue, but want to do so in a way that is more personal and meaningful. If so, our “sponsor a dog” scheme is perfect for you.

We currently offer three types of sponsorships

  • 12 month regular sponsorship (£52)
  • 6 month regular sponsorship (£26)
  • 12 month kennel sponsorship (£100)

By sponsoring, you ensure that your chosen dog will be warm and dry, have plenty of comfy bedding, access to any vet treatment required and will be well fed during their stay. All sponsors receive an A5 certificate of sponsorship, as well as a birthday card from their chosen sponsor dog (they really do write them, honest!). Kennel sponsors will have their name displayed on their kennel for a year.

You can also sponsor for someone else – with Christmas coming up, this would be a great idea to send as a gift to a friend or loved one. If you are planning on gifting a sponsorship, make sure to do it as soon as possible so we have time to post out the certificate before the last posting date (18th December for Royal Mail).

Anyway, it’s time to meet a few of the dogs…

The Newbies

Ida and Izzy are our latest sponsor girls.

Ida’s great granny was an outstanding brood, producing Group 1’s galore. We gave up counting the track records her kids held and couldn’t be bothered with mere Opens. Her granny and mum should never have come out of the van however, and Ida has followed in their footsteps. Still too nervous to even contemplate rehoming, she will be staying here until she stops being triggered. We all have to earn our keep though, so she has now retrained as a sponsor dog. Perhaps she’s a late bloomer.

Izzy was about 6 months old when we were asked to take her in; her siblings were picking on her. She is so happy and loving, but unfortunately, she has lesions on her brain which affects her coordination, balance, and learning. She is in a permanent foster home, but Tia will still be responsible for any veterinary care costs for her for life.

The old guard

The rest of the sponsor block have been with us a long, long time (since before we moved to Scotland).

Many of you know about the Sheffield 13 group that arrived at Tia at the end of 2019. When they arrived, they were neglected and damaged; wrecked, emotionally and physically. Amongst them were four beautiful brothers – Mr Mole, Terence, Eugene and Bungle.

Like many dogs before them, these dogs were just too broken to be rehomed, and so they became sponsor dogs. Sadly, we lost Eugene in 2021, Terence in 2022, and Mr Mole early in 2023. They were all loved immensely. We still have Bungle; he is a lovely boy but remains troubled, his eyes still full of sadness.

Spot & Dot were also part of the Sheffield 13 group. Having spent so long in the dark, these two are inseparable; we have serious problems if they even lose sight of each other. The world is still a very scary place to them.

And this old fella? This is Langley. A big gentle black hound with mesmerising eyes, he has been with us for many years. He is going grey and getting wobbly, but he still loves going for a stroll around the paddock. He has been a pleasure all these years.

These are just a few of the dogs you can help by sponsoring – if you want to find out about all of them, follow the link here and read their stories. Perhaps you already know who you want to sponsor? If so, just follow this link; choose your dog, type of sponsorship, and enter your details. And don’t forget; payments toward sponsorships are valid for gift aid, which means your contribution could be worth 25% more. Please remember to sign up at checkout if you are eligible!

If you do decide to sponsor, we would appreciate payment to be made via bank transfer; this way, the money will go directly to our account and we will not be charged costly payment processing fees.

Thank you.
