Sheffield 13 : The beginning of the end part 1

Sheffield 13 : The beginning of the end part 1

Late on Friday the 27th December 2019 I got a phone call, from one of my contacts, to say that an old guy had died and he had left 13 greyhounds on an allotment in Sheffield.  “They are all old dogs and there is no one to look after them.”
When I arrived there the next day I was prepared for what I would find, 24 years rescuing greyhounds and there’s nothing much shocks or surprises me, or so I thought.
The dogs were spread over 3 separate gardens on the allotment.  They were all in seperate kennels, covered in their own mess, no food , no water and no bedding.  The faeces was that high I could barely open the kennel doors. The stench was unbelievable.
The first ten were loaded onto the van but  I had to leave three behind for the second trip.
When we got back they were so pleased to see us, tails wagging, apart from  a younger black boy an absolute wreck, in a small dark shed, doing the wall of death, he didn’t want to be caught he was terrified and could barely see after being locked away so long. I didn’t know if he was going to bite me when I went into his “kennel” he was messing himself, absolutely terrified trying to escape….no escaping me mate…he didn’t bite.
Thanks to all my staff and volunteers, some who came in at short notice. The dogs were all bathed, claws cut and taken to their new fresh, clean kennels.
They are all on good food and antibiotics. Chris our vet is aware and making urgent arrangements to come and do the dentals in our onsite vet room…
The eldest blue girl with the awful teeth is 12yrs old. She is the happiest.
So here they all are….they just need names, I doubt they have ever had any.
The sad, sad thing is that these dogs have been in a bad way for a long, long time.
If only he had asked for help….Tia would have helped because that is what we do.
They didn’t go out yesterday but they have all been out into the paddocks today.
Welcome to your new life…for the time you have left you will be absolutely ruined.
ps i don’t know who fetched all the sausage rolls in over the weekend, but thankyou, they like sausage rolls…Deb
So welcome to our new arrivals…Mr Mole, Bungle, Terence, Eugene, Stilton, Babybelle, MooMar, Pollypocket, Ramble, Winnie, Spot, Dot and Rose…

Well if anything could go wrong it has. With all the beautiful snow and ice the downside was we had no water in the buildings or out in the fields. Lots of swearing, by Bob and the 1000l container filled up by Bob only to be emptied every day by the guzzling horses out in the fields.  Fortunately we still had water in the prep room for the dogs. Hilarity and slight hysteria getting from the kennels to the prep room though. If we were still in Doncaster it would have all been captured on CCTV and all over the internet by now…

Then just as quickly as it froze, it thawed.

Then the smell in the house, sorry Lana I blamed you. But then it got worse, an electrical smell. The house nearly went up a couple of nights ago but we were very fortunate that it didn’t…

So now, after many conversations and visiting electricians, and more swearing, we have only limited electrics in the house and very limited on the yard. Clearly the house is not important.

We will manage, it’s like being back at Fall Lane, carting water about and wearing head torches. The dogs are oblivious. We can only use 2 of the gas heaters but thankfully it is warming up and they all had coats on last night just in case…

The electrics are shot and it is going to be very expensive no doubt….but we are, hopefully, all safe and the rest will work itself out…..Deb

Absolutely thrilled.

We had William since he was born, we had him for six years and we used to show him in his youth.

Sometimes opportunities come up that you can’t afford to miss and when the guys at Royal Park Shires wanted to adopt him, although it was hard to let him go, we knew they could offer him a better life than we could. So off he went with another Shire we had called Henry. They later also adopted a grey mare that we had called Lizzie.

Just absolutely wonderful to see this video of him, in London, delivering a Xmas tree to the Royal family.

Not bad for a rescue horse….not bloody bad at all.

Thanks to everyone at Royal Park Shires, you are just amazing….

Winter sorted

Winter sorted

As you all know we are struggling massively financially but I have no intention of losing this Charity or the animals.

When we got some money in July from my old friend Cynthia I might have done a little bit of panic buying.

We had made our own haylage in the summer so that saved us a lot of money.

The Butchers food was donated as were all the carpet squares for the bottom of the dog beds.

So that’s us set for the winter….we still need Chappie and Sardines and all the time but other than that I think we are sorted..

Obviously that doesn’t include all the monthly outgoings but we are in a better position than some and the farm is owned by the Charity….we will just sit tight and hope for the best…

I wish I slept as well as Uriah & Lana
