Christmas Raffle and Memory Tree

Christmas Raffle and Memory Tree

A huge thank you to everyone who entered the 500 club draw – entries are now closed. The winners of the first prize draw will be announced later today!

But as we move into December, we are pleased to announce two more fundraising events we hope you’ll get involved with…

Christmas Raffle 2025

As always, we have launched our annual Christmas Raffle! There are only two prizes this year, but they’re whoppers.

  1. An enormous Luxury Hamper containing over 80 items for yourself, festive visitors and your four legged friends. The hamper will be delivered to you wherever in the country you are.
  2. A week in the static caravan at Tia Rescue or you can upgrade to the holiday let for a donation of £200.

Entries cost £5 – you can enter here.

Memory Tree

After the success of last years memory tree, we pleased to be running it again this year.

Like last year, we are going to cover the Christmas Tree in the kennels with natural wood heart shaped decorations, each one with the name and message of your choice.

This can be in memory of a much-loved pet, family member, or simply to send Christmas Greetings to Tia’s residents, past & present.

We ask for a minimum £5 per heart, although you are welcome to donate as much as you would like above this.

You can buy your heart (s) here.

Proceeds from all fundraisers go directly towards the care of the animals at Tia Rescue, registered charity 1105626 (England & Wales), and SC051782 (Scotland).

Rehoming

Available for rehoming

December is just around the corner! But, before we all tuck in to the turkey, we have one final transport to Scotland planned for 14th December.

Santa already has a few very special packages on his sleigh, but he still has room for more! And there is only one thing our hounds have on their Christmas list this year… it is of course… a home!

Here are just a few of the dogs keeping everything crossed that they’ll be on the transport and “driving home for Christmas”

If you’re based in Scotland, and can help get one of our hounds home, please email rehoming@tia-rescue.org. Please include your phone number in the email.

We request a minimum donation of £350 to adopt.

Redbrick Brothers

This week there’s been good news for two of the Redbrick Brothers! Mars has been reserved by a lovely family and will be heading North of the border in mid December. Rolo meanwhile has found himself in a wonderful short-term foster whilst he waits to find his forever family.

24 hours in, and his foster family tell us he’s a super affectionate boy who is already clean in the house and will wait by the door when he needs to go outside.

It’s great to see these overlooked black boys finally getting their chance. Like so many, they had both been waiting far too long.

Jet

A seriously striking boy, Jet is only 2 years old and really just a baby. He’s quite a serious soul who gets top marks for manners in his kennel. He is never any trouble and spends most of his time laid quietly in his bed.

Jet is very recently retired due to a muscle injury and needs someone to show him there is life away from the track. He’s quite keen at the minute but once Jet understands that trips to the park and for strolls & sniffs, he’ll be just fine.

Woody

On the last check on Wednesday, Woody was really lame on his back right leg. I think its his hip. He has been quiet for ages, but i just thought he was missing Maha. He’s off his food too.

Lets hope it’s nothing horrible. I am seriously fed up of losing these old dogs. He is no bother in the office/house/large dog kennel, so here he will stay.

It costs just £52 per year to sponsor Woody – you can do so here.

Kenny

Here’s Little Kenny heading off back down to Hornsea, at stupid o’clock, to be reunited with his previous owner, Julie, who makes the dog collars. Safe journey little man.

Kenny was originally from the death field in Wroot. He was 2 weeks old when we got him…his mom had died. He is now six years old…gonna miss you…

Thanks again to Gillies Horse Transport, who are simply the best…

A Very Sad State Of Affairs

Looking back through Facebook, its always the same posts. Begging for money, begging for volunteers and begging for staff in the kennels. I don’t mean recently, its always been the same for the past twenty years.

We have really good staff at the Pickering shop, Emma and Sally and Josh who runs the office down in Doncaster. We have a fab team up here on the yard but we are down to just one (amazing) member of staff and 3 (equally amazing) volunteers in the kennels.

The slippy floor continues to be a risk to the dogs, there is only so much carpet you can cut, another major factor.

Of course Bob is picking up all the extra work but I’ve had enough. We haven’t had a proper holiday in 8 years. 7 days a week he does, every week, every month, every year.

So there are lots of decisions to made in the future. But for now there are no more dogs (unless emergencies like Duchess) coming in to kennels.

Every day trainers are begging for me to take their dogs. If I said yes there would be a race up the A1 to see who could get here first. And of course the offer of money, per dog, is going up.

We have eighteen sponsor dogs here at the farm. But I doubt Lana, Dot and Bungle will see the New Year in. They will as always get whatever they need. There are quite possibly thousands of dogs backing up in trainers kennels.

We have 15 empty kennels. It breaks my heart.

Rehoming

Hugo’s Journey

On a more positive note, this is Hugo.

Three weeks ago, he was in the stray kennel in Leeds.

A short stay here and now…

Good luck little man. A cracking little lad…

Boost and Annie

Poor Boost is having no luck whatsoever finding himself a home. So we wonder if a search alongside his kennel-mate, Annie, might prove more fruitful? It’s normally harder to find homes for two but both Boost & Annie need re-homing with another dog for company, so why not see if we can find them somewhere together?

Greyhounds are used to living in pairs and often benefit from having another hound for company. And let’s face it… it’s no more effort to walk two… it’s obviously the reason we were given two hands?!

Boost (left) is a lovely quiet boy who retired yonks ago and has been waiting over a year for a home. He walks nicely on his lead (no drama or silliness) and his calm nature gives kennel-mate, Annie, a lot of reassurance. Her trainer tells us timid Annie is like a different dog when Boost is around.

Annie is a shy girl who takes her time to get to know new people but is friendly with the people she trusts. She can be a bit worried and needs patient adopters who understand that she is not yet familiar with the outside world. Annie gains a great deal of confidence from Boost and would find it easier to adjust with him (or another calm dog) by her side.

We appreciate two is a big ask but this pair really do benefit from each other’s company.

Dolly

Her connections may have rolled their eyes when she came in 18 lengths behind the competition, but little did they know, there was method in the pint-sized madam’s madness!

See our Dolly doesn’t care for getting sand between her toes. She’d make an exception for the warm & sunny beach of St Tropez, but in the drizzle and damp of Donny, it really gave her the ick!The solution she realised was simple… hang back when the others leave the traps… and dawdle your way to the finish as if you’re out for an afternoon stroll! And now everyone thinks you’re rubbish, you can spend your days doing what you do best… looking cute & pretty! Not a grain of sand in sight!Dolly is 3 years old, very friendly and cute as a button. If you can offer Boost, Annie, or Dolly a home, please email rehoming@tia-rescue.org.

Please leave your phone number in the email!

Wood for sale

As some of you may know we have just over 30 acres of woodland here, mainly silver birch. We have recently had the woodland thinned out, but the contractors have left an awful lot of decent wood on the floor.

If anyone is wanting any firewood for next year, please get in with Deb touch on on 07974 960684. We are asking for donations for the Charity.

Rehoming

Jim

Lovely Jim is a happy go lucky boy whose tail didn’t stop wagging when he met with our volunteers. He’s a super friendly lad who has just turned 3 and is still quite a playful pup at heart.

Jim likes to spend his time with people and be “in” on the action, so he would suit a home where he can be very much involved in family life.

His happy go lucky nature means Jim hasn’t put much effort in to his rehoming to date but after hearing his kennel mate, Jane, is off to her new home in November, Jim’s decided he needs to up his game! It would be great to see him heading off to start a new chapter too.

Duchess

This time just over two weeks ago, Crystal Duchess was in a stray kennel up here after being found in woods with a damaged hock. The council didn’t want to fund the treatment and took her to the vets to be pts.

Fortunately, Wards vets in Elgin refused and contacted the welfare department of the GBGB, who then rang us for our help.

Long story short…Duchess, now Tia, has gone off to her foster home with a fabulous greyhound boy to look after her. Mom and dad are experienced owners and will take over her care. We will of course be sorting half of the vet bill, as the GBGB are funding the other half.

Duchess was one of many dogs that went to Hillthorpe greyhound rescue. A rescue that was open and shut within months near Selby. She raced at Sheffield. Most of the dogs were removed/taken back from the “rescue” by the trainers when Silas & Rami were pulled out of the canal in Leeds. Apparently the GBGB are investigating.

Well at least he took the rehoming money and gave the dogs away. Rebecca Perkins took the money, starved them to death and chucked them in a big hole on her land.

No we will never forget.

Reeves

What’s a boy to do?! Over the past few months, Reeves has given his rehoming his absolute all but… despite giving 110%… the poor boy has still had no luck.

Reeves has been out with our volunteers on many occasions and is a firm favourite. He always travels well in the car. Jumping in by himself & laying down for the journey. Reeves doesn’t pull on his lead, is an absolute pleasure to walk and hasn’t reacted to any of the other breeds he’s seen. These are the 3 questions prospective adopters most frequently ask… so we can’t understand why Reeves hasn’t been inundated with enquiries?!

Reeves attended the Tia walk at Cannon Hall a few weeks ago where he behaved impeccably! He was friendly with all the other hounds and people he met and was even spotted walking alongside a spaniel at one point. Everyone he met loved him.

So… after trying everything else… Reeves has decided he might as well just spell it out…

Enough said!

Adoption Donation

We have been asked on a couple of occasions recently why we ask for a minimum £350 donation to adopt a Tia hound. The reasons below will not be news to our long-term supporters. Indeed, it’s why they have stood with Tia through thick and thin. But we are conscious that we have new followers and supporters who might not understand how the industry works…

      • The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) operates a rehoming scheme, which offers a financial payout per dog to affiliated rehoming centres. As an independent rescue, Tia are not – never have been and never will be – part of this scheme, despite the GBGB’s regular appeals for us to change our mind!
      • As such, Tia receives NO money from the industry to assist in the rehoming of these beautiful dogs. Instead we rely on the generous support of the public and our adopters to continue our valuable work rescuing and rehoming.
      • When adopting a Tia hound, your donation will contribute towards (not cover!) the essential care our dogs receive prior to their adoption. Some may require neutering and dentals, some may require other veterinary care for injury or illness, some may have been cared for in our kennels for months (or even years). All of which comes at a considerable cost.
      • In addition, your donation helps us continue to care for those dogs who, for whatever reason, cannot be rehomed. Many rehoming organisations will not even consider taking these dogs. Instead they “cherry pick” the easy to home girls and the pretty colours. The trainers then contact Tia and ask us to rehome the rest. We do so gladly… because Tia believes EVERY dog is equally deserving of a happy retirement.
      • And lastly but by no means least… rehoming one of these beautiful souls is a huge responsibility. Owning a dog is a big commitment and, as any dog owner knows, a costly business! We believe our minimum donation reflects our adopters’ ability to offer a lifetime of love and care to these precious dogs, which is nothing less than they deserve.

So… what is the “price” of a Greyhound? At Tia we believe that each and every one of these dogs – regardless of age, colour, behaviour, injury – is priceless.

We hope you agree.

Otto

Otto was one of our Doncaster stray ponies.

Now living his best life on the Isle of Lewis, with his buddies, Angie & Celine from the death field…and Rusty…

Warzone Tom and Salacres Hilda enjoying their new home up in Scotland… absolutely gorgeous.

Meet the new girl…

Our new girl. A doll in teacup.

Just arrived at our kennels in Nairn, after an adventure the little mouse could have done without. Every girl needs a story to tell and this little darling is fortunate enough to have come out almost unscathed. How she ended up in the woods in Lhanbryde near Elgin, only she knows. She went to the same “rehoming center” as the boys who were chucked in the canal in Leeds…I will do an update on that soon.

There is an injury to sort out and a bit of a dust up on the horizon, but for now, lets just enjoy her obvious pleasure at being back in an environment she understands. Lucky to be alive and no, the lady isn’t going anywhere just yet.

The lads are quite thrilled.

Kennel assistant needed

We have a vacancy in the kennels for a kennel hand to join our very small team at the farm.
  • Days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Hours: 8am – 4pm.
  • Own transport is essential
  • Minimum wage

Please email deb@tia-rescue.org

Thanks.

Thank you

A huge thank you to everyone who came to the Tia walk at Cannon Hall last Sunday. We managed to raise over £1000 in total.

We will be back there for our Christmas Walk on Sun 14th Dec.

Our next event is our stall at Otley Buttercross on Sat 15th Nov.

Other news…

Remember the Mcmanus dogs that were left to rot in kennels? This big lad, all 40kilos, was one of them.

He loves Nairn and the beach and his cat who goes on walks with him…

Yes really..
