Can You Help Us, To Help Them?

Tia Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue is a registered charity in England & Wales, and more recently Scotland.  We are completely independent of the greyhound racing industry, and dedicated to the rescue, care and rehoming of these wonderful dogs. For 26 years the Charity was based in Yorkshire. The last 4 years have been in Scotland, due to financial pressures after Covid.

Whilst the farm in Scotland is now more of a sanctuary, the decision has been made to find a smaller base in Yorkshire where the need for rehoming these dogs is still a massive problem.  However, the days of having over 100 dogs in kennels is no longer viable…a smaller kennel will suffice for emergencies.  We now have a small team in Yorkshire who are now rehoming retired dogs straight from the trainers’ kennels, either into foster or permanent homes.

In our 30th Anniversary year it might be forgivable to celebrate past achievements, but we are instead very much focused on the future.  A future which ensures we are best placed to continue our mission – rescuing and rehoming these wonderful hounds.  But we cannot achieve this alone.  To be successful we need additional trustees who share our ethos and passion for Greyhound welfare and can play a “hands on” role in the charity’s future.

The responsibilities of trustees are outlined in charity legislation, but essentially, your role will be to help guide the charity, helping to develop and maintain the effective and efficient running of the organisation. The demands of being a trustee mean that a time commitment is important. In addition to regular trustee meetings, (approximately on a quarterly basis), sub-groups discuss detailed aspects of the charity’s work to support the operational team and bring recommendations to the full board. There are also occasional meetings in between these times to support specific projects or programmes of work. Most meetings are held virtually, by video, although we hope to hold at least one face to face meeting annually in the future.

In summary, we are looking for new trustees to play a “hands on” role in supporting us in our work. You will need to be able to commit to regular meetings, mostly online; work on projects outside of meetings; and, most importantly, be a team player. We welcome trustees from all backgrounds, although skills and experience in Finance, People management and welfare, PR/communications, animal health and welfare, business development, IT, digital development, and legal & compliance are especially useful. That said, enthusiasm in supporting the aims of the charity is the most important aspect of a trustee and everyone can contribute to the success of Tia. We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds and will provide support to help new trustees in their role.
