An easy introduction to the plight of Traveller ponies in South Yorkshire. We received a call about a pony that had been tied up and abandoned in a park. Her owner had previously kept her in the garden but the kids moved on to a PlayStation and Squirt had to go. Tia had no idea of the horrors of abandoned foals and starving mares at that point. We helped as many as we could. Some died and some didn't. All but Zorro, Thor and Squirt found great homes but these three were damaged from ragwort poisoning and insisted redworm. It is a miracle that they are still alive. Squirt has had a particularly hard life and looks a lot older than she is. Two years ago she had lots of awful sarcomas removed, last year she stopped eating due to severe gut damage and inflammation. She was a bag of bones and could hardly stand. We were just deciding where she was going to be buried when she started eating again. On top of all that she has a really bad heart murmur, Grade 4. She will be on a low dose of steroids for life.
