What is gift aid?
What is gift aid, you ask?
Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows us to reclaim the basic rate tax you pay as a UK taxpayer. In plain English – we can claim 25p of tax for every £1 you donate, all at no extra cost to you. This means that if you make a £100 donation and gift aid it, we receive £125.
There is also another type of gift aid called retail gift aid. If you make a donation of goods to one of our charity shops, and they sell (say for £20), we can claim an extra 25% on that £20, meaning we receive £25 in total.
Essentially, your donation of goods is “converted” to a cash donation, and we claim on this in exactly the same way as we would with any other cash donation.
What payments qualify for gift aid?
On the Tia Rescue website, valid gift aid-able payments include;
-
- Donations (one-off, regular…)
Sponsorships (dog/ kennel, horse/ stable) - Tia Gifts
- Fundraisers: “Have a heart for Tia Rescue“, brick appeals…
- Retail Gift Aid Sales
- Donations (one-off, regular…)
Essentially, any payment for which you do not receive any goods or services in return (barring low-value “token gifts” like our sponsorship certificates) is a valid gift aid-able donation.
What payments do not qualify for gift aid?
Payments which are not gift aid eligible are;
-
- Payments made to enter into the Tia Rescue monthly lottery; this is classed as gambling and is therefore exempt
- Payments made for items sold on our website shop; you receive goods for these, therefore they are exempt
Raffle entries; again, this is classed as gambling
(List not exhaustive)
Do I qualify for gift aid?
To qualify for gift aid, you must;
- Be a UK tax payer
- Have paid at least as much Income Tax and/ or Capital Gains Tax as the amount
of Gift Aid to be claimed on all your donations in that tax year. This includes gift aided donations made to other charities as well, not just Tia Rescue.
How do I sign up?
When making your payment at checkout on our website, the full gift aid T&C will be provided for you to read through; if you qualify all you need to do is tick the box. Any donations made via Facebook (via PayPal Giving) are also valid for gift aid, should you be be eligible and sign up.
For retail gift aid, you will need to fill in a retail gift aid declaration form when you donate goods to one of our shops. You (and your donated goods) will be assigned a unique retail gift aid ID, and in the event your items sell, we will then be able to use this ID to match up the sale with yourself, and claim the extra 25%.
It’s that simple – so why not do it?
